Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in southwest Colorado Springs continues to be one of the top tourist attractions in El Paso County. Tourist and locals enjoy the privileged of claiming they’ve visited the only mountainside zoo in America and the 6th best zoo in the nation!
It all dates back to 1916 when Spencer Penrose (a founding father of Colorado Springs) receives a bear as a gift and his passion for animals is born. Ten years later, he began migrating animals from his ranch and the Broadmoor Hotel to the location which is the present site of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Although they don’t give away bears as gifts, you’ll get to see all types of animals and whether you’re just visiting for the day or hosting an event, there are opportunities for everyone to enjoy various exhibits and attractions.
Today, both locals and tourist often recall their favorite experience, in one of the nation’s best giraffe exhibits, is the opportunity to hand-feed the beautiful long-necked creatures. Additionally, there are more than 750 animals to experience during your day trip, as well as the Mountaineer Sky Ride, the historic carousel from the 1933 Century of Progress Fair in Chicago, and interactive family-learning exhibits. Plus, plenty of options to make the best use of your money, including group discounts and annual membership plans.
Come enjoy and support this excellent independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with your family and friends and win bragging rights that you’ve seen one of the most unique zoos in the country.
