A once familiar Panadero Ski Area is back open, just 2 hours from Cañon City, Colorado.
There are lots of choices when in comes to downhill skiing or snowboarding in Colorado, and the most recent ski area option is doing things a bit different.
Cuchara Mountain Park isn’t a ski resort – rather, it’s a public park operated and managed by Panadero Ski Corporation, a non-profit organization located in Huerfano County, Colorado. Yes, that’s right – a 501(c)3 non-profit you can make tax deductible donations to which will help bring more amenities and updates to the once popular Panadero Ski Area that has struggled for decades, including multiple owners and periods of closure.
Finally, current staff and community members celebrated opening day on December 14th 2024 with some limited services and options, but opens up a new options for skiers looking for an affordable ski area in Colorado. Plus, cities and counties in Southern Colorado that didn’t have a lot of ski resorts near them before now have an easy get away close to home. Now, according to their website:
“You come to ski at CMP to remember when skiing was simpler, affordable, and focused on community, family, and expanding participation in snowsports and outdoor recreation overall.”
Services may be a bit limited at first, but this helps them build a solid base and keep prices low. For instance, there’s currently no ski rental option on site, but they have partnered with various business near the ski area to get you all geared up prior to arriving. On the same note, lodging and food options are nearby in communities like Cuchara and La Veta, CO (just 20 minutes from the mountain park).
